Patient Transfer Scale shortlisted in HSJ Patient Safety Award 2020
Ambition, visionary spirit and demonstrable positive impact – the PTS is shortlisted for Innovation of the Year award
The Patient Transfer Scale (PTS) is a revolutionary transfer board with inbuilt weighing scale, designed to weigh immobile patients instantly and accurately during lateral transfer.
Invented by Gillian Taylor, former Emergency Department Nurse, NHS Lanarkshire, the PTS was brought to the market in 2018 through a successful collaboration with SHIL and Marsden – a leading medical weighing scales manufacturer.
The need for an accurate weight on admission is significant, from paediatrics to ICU. The PTS was designed to address the needs of patients who are either too sick to stand on scales or are immobile offering significant benefits to both patient care and staff working experience.
Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Gillian, NHS Lanarkshire, Marsden and the SHIL team, the Patient Transfer Scale is now allowing immobile patients to be weighed more quickly and easily in 33 countries worldwide.
Shortlisted within the Patient Safety Innovation of the Year category at the HSJ Awards provides recognition of the outstanding contribution of Gillian and the PTS to healthcare.
Reacting to the nomination, Gillian commented: “I am delighted the PTS has been recognised for the Patient Safety Innovation of the Year award. For myself and lots of my colleagues in NHS Lanarkshire, patient safety is what it’s all about. We are passionate about patient safety and improvement. This award gives recognition to the endless energy and effort put into the development of the PTS as well as the awareness of the device raised in the UK and over the rest of the world, promoting a change in culture from guesstimating weights to accurate weights, and also improved systems and process to the benefit of patient care. Thank you - it is an honour and good luck to all the nominees.”
Graham Watson, Executive Chairman at SHIL adds: “The Patient Transfer Scale is an exemplar of front line health professionals identifying new, more efficient ways to improve patient care. By accelerating the speed at which time-critical medications can be administered it offers significant benefit in the treatment of stroke, sepsis, pain management and other conditions whereby a standing weight measurement cannot be achieved. It is absolutely fitting to be shortlisted as 'Innovation of the Year', demonstrating the value of nurturing talent and entrepreneurship from our dedicated health professionals."
Winners will be selected ahead of the ceremony, which will take place virtually as part of the Patient Safety Virtual Congress and Awards in November 2020.
The Health Science Journal (HSJ) is the news and insight service for all healthcare leaders working in, for, or with the NHS; and host of the Patient Safety Awards – celebrating the teams and the people putting safety first and help drive improvements in culture and quality across the NHS.
