Paediatric SCRAM® launches at Retrieval 2019  image

The Paediatric SCRAM® (Structured CRitical Airway Management) line, provides a structured, reproducible approach to paediatric airway management encompassing the neonatal to adolescent age range. This innovative solution to paediatric emergency airway management was invented by health professionals from Scottish Ambulance Service and NHS Lothian, and supported to commercialisation by Scottish Health Innovations Ltd (SHIL). It was officially launched at the 2019 Retrieval conference – the UK’s national prehospital and retrieval conference.

Based on the principles and design of the successful Adult SCRAM® Bag, the Paediatric SCRAM® line promotes the delivery of safe, timely, well-governed paediatric emergency airway management when getting it right first time really matters.

This system of advanced preparation and organisation of equipment, set out in an easy-to-orientate age range manner, is designed to enhance the performance of paediatric airway management outwith the operating theatre by:

  • Reducing time to intervention
  • Standardising practice
  • Reducing error rate
  • Promoting good governance
  • Reducing cognitive load.

Paediatric SCRAM®

Particularly useful for in-hospital environments where emergency paediatric RSI outwith the operating theatre is necessary. This is an extremely rare event but can be required by the sudden arrival of a critically injured child in the Emergency Department resuscitation room, a medical collapse on a ward or acute unexpected deterioration during diagnostic or therapeutic interventions.

Paediatric EMS SCRAM®

A compact Paediatric Emergency Airway Bag, designed to be useful in prehospital, retrieval environments.

Paul Swinton, co-inventor of the paediatric versions of SCRAM®,outlines the development of the products: 

“Following the success of the Adult SCRAM® we received strong demand from the medical community for a Paediatric version of SCRAM®. This presented different challenges because one needs to take into account the broader size range of equipment required to cover the paediatric body size spectrum, ranging from around 3kg at birth to 50kg at adolescence, and at the same time have an optimal ergonomic design that improves task utilisation of equipment.

We used the same philosophy and principles of the successful, Adult SCRAM®, took advice from paediatric pre-hospital, anaesthetic and critical care consultants and tailored the product to the specific requirements of paediatric airway management.”
