Scottish Health Innovations Celebrates 1000 Bright Ideas

Scottish Health Innovations Ltd (SHIL) was formed, many NHS Scotland employees have come forward with innovative ideas that improve healthcare. At SHIL, we firmly believe that those working in the frontline of NHS Scotland providing healthcare are in the very best position to identify ways to improve that care. This was highlighted further when the total number of new ideas brought to the company for assessment reached1000.

Rhinopinch_nasal_clip_fpSHIL has seen a wide variety of projects brought to the company. These vary from simple to complex ideas. Many are technical or ground-breaking  however they don't have to be to benefit patient care. This was outlined by the very first product that SHIL took to market. This was a dressing designed by an anaesthetist to dress the groin area after surgery. Over the years SHIL has developed other simple but effective ideas including the RhinoPinch® a nasal clip to stop nose bleeds, and the My Pal, a posture management block for children with conditions such as cerebral palsy. MyPal-Kinderkey-imageMore complex products such as the Multifocal Imager 3GENTM, a product for detection of damage to retinal function, are now being sold .

SHIL has also played an important part in helping the NHS form spinout companies including Ambicare Health Ltd and Touch Bionics. To find out more about any of the products or companies mentioned please click the links.

This does not mean the idea is not a good one, it means that people are looking in the right places for innovation, as they strive to improve patient care.

So what was idea 1000? Unfortunately that's top secret! One of the first things SHIL will tell a budding inventor is to keep an idea secret until adequate protection is put in place to stop someone else taking the idea to market without crediting the inventor or NHS. Hopefully we will be able to tell you soon!
